BEQUEST TO CITY
Conditions A Problem
There was considerable doubt whether the City Council had power to conduct a convalescent or rest home “on strictly vegetarian lines,” said Cr. H. P. Smith, chairman of the finance committee, yesterday when he welcomed the gift to the city of a home in Hackthorne road and the rest of a retired farmer’s estate to run a home. The council would do its utmost to co-operate in carrying out the wishes of the testator, Cr. Smith said, but there would need to be investigation and a report on the special conditions of the bequest.
