Refurbished "Garden"

(Special Crjpdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Sept 1. When the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden reopens on Thursday there will be no gallery—“the gods” as they have been known in the 106-year-old theatre. The gallery, with its hard backless benches, has been merged into a new amphitheatre and fitted with comfortable chairs. The price of admission will be 8s 6d—an extra sixpence. The cost of demolishing the gallery and rebuilding the new amphitheatre has been about £150,000. Another £300,000 will be spent on rewiring which is to be completed in a year. The disappearance of “the gods” means 57 fewer seats, but the theatre with its 1300 stalls, will still hold 2115 persons.
