Board Of Inquiry On Derailment Expected

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 31. There would probably be a board of inquiry into the derailment of a diesel engine from the Opua-Kawakawa line yesterday, said the District Traffic Manager (Mr S. G. Muir) in Auckland todav.

He and the district engineer, Mr R. H. Newton, and the district mechanical engineer, Mr W. F. Hudson, inspected the line before repairs were made.

Mr Muir said the result of the inspection would involve a lot of calculation. He said he could not comment on why two youths were in the cab, together with the driver and guard. Investigations were proceeding on that point. Mr Newton would not comment on the cause of the incident He said traffic was now op-

erating normally over the line. Mr Hudson studied the problem of recovering the two diesel units from the mud alongside the tracks. The two locomotives each weigh 76 tons. The department’s two large mobile cranes in the North Island have a lifting capacity of 40 tons each, so both will have to be used. One of the cranes is in Auckland, the other in Wellington, so it is expected to be a couple of days before the operation can begin.
