Garnet Carroll Dead
Mr Garnet Carroll, one of Australia’s leading theatre owners and entrepreneurs, died last week in South Yarra, aged 61. He had been connected with Australian theatre for 44 years. Mr Carroll made numerous visits to New Zealand in promoting stage productions, among his last being the Sadler’s Wells Opera Company’s tour with “The Merry Widow” and “Orpheus in the Underworld.”
Last year he conducted a New Zealand-wide search for talent in singing and dancing to meet the tremendous boom in musical theatre in Australia.
Many New Zealanders will no doubt remember Mrs Carroll, formerly Catherine Stewart, who played the lead in musical comedies in New Zealand in the late 1930’5. Among her successes were “Lady Be Good,” “Mercenary Mary.” “Sunny,” “Archie,” “Lido Lady,” and “Tangerine.”
Mr Harold Pinter has been commissioned by the 8.8. C. to write a television play for Eurovision relay to 16 countries in the autumn. It will be called “Tea Party.”
