An official toll of 37 dead: and 28 injured is given in the I fireworks-and-gas explosion I which took place in the vil-i lage of Atlatlahuca on Mon-| day. The unexplained explosion! of fireworks stored in a private home for celebrations of I the fiesta of St Bartholomew! set off two tanks of butane! gas. The blasts destroyed three] buildings in the village of 2600 population, about 35! miles south-west of Mexico; City.
Among the dead were all 17 members of the town band of Zumphuacam, which was participating in the annual religious festival. Ten women and five children, pilgrims who had sought refuge from rain in a house, were among the dead. The first of the series of explosions was in a room of the house where 3000 skyrockets and several cans of black powder had been stored in preparation for the celebration.
