Legatus Works Well At Awapuni

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NTH., Aug. 27. Legatus was the most impressive worker at Awapunl today when final trials were held for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting. Continuous rain overnight made conditions sloppy, but Legatus still ran a fast six furlongs. Others to please included Bagush, Red View, Laramie and Copper Fair. On the course proper, Legatus left six furlongs behind in the good time of Imin 17 2-ssec. He kept up a strong pace and ran the last three in 39sec. It was a smart effort in the ground. Legatus had a bad run during the final stages of his latest race at Tauherenikau and he could be hard to beat in the Seafteld Hack Handicap.

Bagush was far too good for Alaska today. They ran seven furlongs and kept together until the straight, where Bagush drew away to beat Alaska by five lengths in Imin 40sec, the last three in 42sec. Bagush was not out to make fast time, but his gallop was again a good one. A decision regarding a start on Saturday will be left until tomorrow. Alaska was well beaten and worked disappointingly. He is also a candidate for the F. F. Newman Handicap, in which he will be ridden by V. R. Coley. Copper Fair showed pace for a jumper to run a mile freely in Imin 45sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. He kept going strongly to the end, and It was impressive work in preparation for the Tally-Ho Steeplechase. He was a good third at Foxton in his debut over the bigger fences, and this morning’s trial indicates that he will again run prominently on Saturday. Red View hit out in fine style today when he left six furlongs behind in Imin 18 2-ssec, the last three in 38sec. He likes the Wanganui course and may go close to repeating last year’s success in the F. F. Newman Handicap. Laramie appeared to be taking things easily, all the way over five furlongs in Imin fisec the last three in 39sec. He has progressed well since his sound race last week at Foxton. He appeared unlucky and he looks a good prospect for the Durie Hack Handicap this week.
