RANDOM REMINDER

RIVIERA OF THE SOUTH

There is no doubt that Christchurch At Night is becoming an exciting city. Where, a few years ago, the late reveller, to coin a phrase, could not do much better than egg and chips, sometimes presented apparently as a deliberate affront to the diner, he may now take his choice of a considerable number of reputable eating places, some of whicb offer the added incentive of what appears on the surface, at least, to be a comprehensive wine list. More than that. There is Entertainment. There are bands, in the modern

idiom, there are individual performances and duets and trios and quartets, and there are Dancing Girls. Or chorines. Hardly a Saturday night passes, these days, without some assembly of gorgeous girls kicking their heels up for the edification of the cash customer. Sometimes, when the moon is on the estuary, it is all good enough to make the Riviera sit up and take notice. But. it must be confessed. there are occasional disappointments. We have a friend—it’s the truth—who took some overseas visitors out for dinner re-

cently, and in choosing one of the more romantic and highly-regarded rendezous, had in mind that it might hint at the fact that Christchurch was growing up. And. for a while it went well. The food was warm, and It was only a matter of a couple of hours before they were well into the meal. The entertainment was good too, until the chorus line hove into sight. This was the let-down. One of the young lovelies had lost—between nature and her dentist—her teeth: and she had not—between her dentist and herself—replaced them.
