New Museum Officer Mr D. R. Gregg, a senior scientific officer in the Geological Survey in Christchurch, has been appointed keeper of geology at the Canterbury Museum. It is a new appointment designed to extend this work.

Mr Gregg, who is 37 and married with three children, was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and entered the University of Canterbury on a national scholarship. He graduated bachelor of science and then master of science with honours in geology. After two years as a demonstrator in the physics and geology departments of the university, he joined the Geological Survey, first at Rotorua and then at Taupo, working chiefly on geothermal problems. As a senior officer he has been in Christchurch since 1957, did much of the Hurunui survey, and lately has been investigating bentonitic clays near Coalgate. He has served on the Canterbury council of the Royal Society of New Zealand, was a foundation member of the Geological Society of New Zealand and secretary since 1961, and is a member of the New Zealand Archeological Association.

He will take up the appointment .in about three months. The appointment is made possible by a bequest from Dr. H. F. von Haast, whose father (Sir Julius von Haast) founded the Canterbury Museum.
