Martin Beats Rival In Junior Tennis

Martin won the final of the under 19 boys’ singles in the Canterbury junior hard court championships at Wilding Park when he beat Mitchell 3-6. 6-1, 64. The national under 17 champion and Canterbury under 19 champion, Mitchell was ranked third junior in the province to Martin’s fifth at the end of last season. Yesterday Martin gave a superior performance. When Mitchell won the first set 6-3, it looked as if the result would be according to form. Then all purpose seemed to go out of Mitchell’s play. As Martin served with strength—he had several aces —and excelled with passing shots, the left-handed Mitchell deteriorated sadly. He lacked concentration and his shots were wild. Martin won the second set 6-1 and went to 3-0. Mitchell fought back and survived eight match points at 3-5 before he went down to Martin’s smoother stroking and touch play. Yesterday’s finals were played In atrocious conditions—wet courts, spraying balls and a bad light—but the tournament was forced to a conclusion because a number of Southlanders were to leave for an Auckland tournament. When the two Bangi-ruru girls. H. Caldwell and G. Thompson, contested the under 19 girls’ final it was the secondseeded Caldwell who won comparatively easily, 6-1, 6-4. Thompson played some attractive strokes, especially on her backhand, but Caldwell had more control, covered the court better and forced more openings. Down at the beginning of the second set, Thompson fought back to lead 4-3 but could not maintain the advantage. Although much slighter than his Southland opponent, P. Fahy, D. Meredith, of Boys' High School, had more pace on his ground strokes and placed his volleys intelligently. Fahy produced some strong services but after that was usually on the defence. The under 15 boys, L. Martin, of Christ’s College, and D. Blackwell (Cashmere High School) had a game of chopping, lobbing and retrieving with Martin more accurate than the left-handed Blackwell. Martin won 6-2, 6-1 not a little because Blackwell became impatient with his controlled strokes. For a girl of 13, R. Legge, of Heaton Intermediate, showed remarkable pace of service and drive to beat R. Dillon with the loss of only one game in the girls’ under 15 final. As at the Easter tournament, the visiting Southlanders were far and away the masters of the under 13 sections. B. McDowell (Southland) was a stronger, more trained youngster than his local opponent.
