English Woman Meets Former Teacher
The highlight of a visit to New Zealand for Mrs O. M. Phillips, of London, was to meet the headmistress of her former London school, Camden School for Girls, in Wellington. Mrs Phillips and Miss 0. Wright who is now teaching at Queen Margaret’s College, have been correseponding ever since Miss Wright left London. “I have learnt much about
New Zealand from her letters and it was a great thrill to meet her again,” said Mrs Phillips in Christchurch yesterday. Mrs Phillips is visiting New Zealand with her husband, who is the secretary of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. They are on their way to Australia for the jubilee of the Austr-lian branch of the institute. “We are both very fond of Cambridge in England and Christchurch is very much like Cambridge, so we feel quite at home,” said Mrs Phillips. “It is the river, the willow, the layout of the city, and the university architecture that makes Christchurch so like Cambridge. “I go shopping or sightseeing while my husband is working and I think New Zealand shops are pretty wonderful.” she said. “Wherever 1 go fashions, shoes, and hair styles are almost identical to those in London.” Mrs Phillips takes dressmaking and millinery classes at home, and she makes all her own hats. “It is so much cheaper.” she said. With her Mrs Phillips had a mink pillbox hat she had made herself for £7. “It would have cost more than £3O to buy in a shop.” she said.
