ECONOMIC SANCTIONS
No Decision By Aust. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, August 26. The Minister for External Affairs (Mr P. M. C. Hasluck) yesterday declined to discuss the Australian’s Government’s attitude to economic sanctions against South Africa. “This is a question of policy and will be considered in the usual manner and a decision announced,” he told the House of Representatives. Mr Hasluck was replying to a Labour member, Mr T. Uren, who said the United Nations General Assembly had recommended trade sanctions against South Africa. Mr Uren said the Kenya Minister for Justice, (Mr Tom Boya) now visiting Australia, had said violence would be the only alternative if South Africa’s problems were not settled peacefully. Mr Boya heard the question and reply from the speaker’s gallery. A Govemmment member, Sir Wiidrid Kent Hughes, later asked the Minister for Trade, Mr J. McEwen to give Mr Uren figures to show that trade between South Africa and China doubled last year. Mr McEwen said that if he could get the figures they would be made available to members.
