HURRICANE TOLL

Fourteen persons were killed when Hurricane Cleo struck Guadaloupe on Saturday, according to provisional figures. The Army, the Red Cross and municipalities were struggling today to provide shelter for hundreds of people made homeless by the hurricane. '
The road from Pointe-a-Pitre to Basse-Terre, in the mountainous south of the island .which suffered most damage,, was still blocked in several places today by landslides. Telephone lines to most places were down, but air services were resumed. The main damage was to banana i plantations, which were almost completely destroyed. The Uriited States Weather Bureau in Miami yesterday warned small craft around Jamaica and the coast of south-east Cuba to "seek and remain in safe harbour" as the hurricane swept on towards the Dominican Republic and south-west Haiti.
