RACING Stayers Impressive in Trials for Ashburton

A number of local stayers with engagements in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday showed a high Standard of fitness in training at Riccarton yesterday.

Boundless was as impressive as any. But the efforts of Golden Vanity, Count Pedro and Silver Kingdom were also first-class and suggested they could be heavily involved in the finish of the first leg of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s double.

All the fast work took place on the No. 1 grass which provided fast footing after * frost Boundless and Zinder were warmed up with a round of pacework apiece on the sand then were partnered over a mile. Boundless, as usual, acted up a bit before breaking away but was upsides with Zinder (A. J. Stokes) when they reached the starting point. From there until the straight they ran as one but Boundless appeared to be doing much the better in the last furlong and ended the gallop under a hold and doing it well half a length in front of his companion. Boundless ran the distance in Imin 41 l-ssec and he came home from the half-mile in 49 2-ssec. In the gallop, Boundless was ridden by his trainer, J. R Shaw. His race-rider will be M. J. Wildermoth. If the ground remains firm Zinder will carry the Tutton

colours in the Tinwald Handicap. But if there is rain his stablemate, McCool, will be the stable representative. Whichever one runs will be ridden by Stokes. Golden Vanity (A. H. Eastwood) reeled off the first half of her mile in 49 2-tSsec and completed the distance in Imin 41 3-ssec. Glentarkin (B. D. Collins) joined in for the last seven furlongs. He did well to. match his stablemate for pace right till the end. Their last six furlongs took Imin 16 4-ssec. Count Pedro (C. T. Wilson) and Silver Kingdom (R. Mawer) were paired in a very sound mile. They were not hustled in the early stages of the gallop, which took Imin 43 3-ssec, but dashed home from the half-mile in 49sec. Sound Effort Tidal Wave (B. S. Finlayson), another Tinwald Handicap candidate, worked fairly keenly in a solo run over ground. He ran the last mile in 10 furlongs in Imin 45see and came home from the half in 51 l-Ssec.

Royal Leigh, which will resume in the open sprint at Ashburton, led- Fonteroy (B. S, Finlayson) by a neck after running the last four of six furlongs in 49 l-ssec. Royal Leigh’s effort looked good for he gave his free-going companion a start of two lengths into the straight

Royal Leigh’s rider was ,E. J. Wilson in yesterday’* gallop. A. J. Stokes will have the mount in the Flying Handicap at Ashburton. Everglades (A, J. Stokes) and Caprino (M. J. Wildermoth) ran the best six of the morning. They took Imin 17 l-ssec and spurted home from the half-mile in 48 4-ssec.

Keep (E. J. Wilson) made ground in the straight to finish within half a length of Omasong (A. Reriti). at the end of six furlongs. Keep was giving his companion a start of three lengths into the last half-mile which took 52 l-ssec. Channel Fleet (D. N. Hadfield) and ’Droid (A. Reriti) were abreast and well clear

of Mygege (E. J. Wilson) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last half-mile In 51 3-ssec. Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) and Canadians (Mrs Clutterbuck) ran the last four of five furlongs together in 50 3-ssec. Doubtful Because of her wide barrier draw, Canadians might not run in the open sprint at Ashburton. Instead she might be reserved for the club’s second spring meeting where Royal Bid will also resume. Mushtara (M. Bailey) and Messmaid (E. G. Low), Elffelton Hack Handicap rivals, showed pace to run home from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. Misjudge (W. Martin) and Scuffle (C. T. Wilson) were paired over seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-ssec. They sprinted together from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. Valuate, which might race in the Ashburton Cup at the second spring meeting, ran seven furlongs in Imin 34 l-ssec and came home from the half-mile in 50 2-ssec. He was ridden by B. S. Finlayson. Waif (B. Stechmann) was shading Malabar Lad (D. N. Hadfield) and Noble Rank (E. G. Low) at the end of half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Noble Rank made a renewed bid after dropping back in the straight. Meandering did well to run the last six furlongs of a working gallop over ground in Imin 17 3-ssec, and came home from the half-mile in 51 2-ssec. It was a sound effort by this veteran stayer for he was kept under a hold and carried a good weight, with C. M. Williams up, but was still keen to go quicker. Easy Task Magician (W. Traecey) was let off with six furlongs at three-quarter pace. He took Imin 33 4-ssec and came home from the half-mile in 55sec. Newbrook (C. T. Wilson) was to have completed a similar task but he was a bit keener to go. He ran in from the seven in Imin 32sec and eame the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. Both these members of J, S. Shaw’s team will resume in the open sprint at Ashburton. Hullabaloo (A. H. Eastwood) and Tuborg (D. N. Hadfield) ran in from the halfmile in 49 2-ssec.

Seaend (E. G. Low) and Marlborough (C. T. Wilson) completed a similar task in dIQ William David (B. Stechmann) Worked away from the mile and a quarter and was joined by Benefice (B. D. Collins) and Foxchief (A. Martin) at the end of two furlongs. William David and Benefice kept together throughout the mile in Imin 46 3-ssec. They came home from the half in 52 3-ssec. Foxchief, which was to have gone with them for six furlongs, wag eased right up on the top turn. Sirtax (W. Traecey) and Mister Bud (F. H. Skelton) took 51 2-ssec for their halfmile.

Allegretto (A. J. Stokes) and We Wood (P. Daly) led Rising Storm (M. J. Wildermoth) by two lengths after six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, the final half-mile in 50 l-ssec.

Corkscrew (B. Campbell) and Colonel’s Lady (B. Roach) were abreast five lengths ahead of Navy Lark (M. Bailey) after running the last four of five furlongs in 53sec. Corkscrew shaped like an early improver, for he was well behind his companions on the home turn. Frolicsome (A. H, Eastwood) led Byair (E. (j. Low) by a neck after running in from the five in Imin 4 4-ssec, the final half-mile in 50 3-ssec. Disguised (A. Telfer) and Yacker (D. N. Hadfield) completed a similar task in Imin 7 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Frigid (A. H. Eastwood) and Coral Prince (L Rogers) ran home from the half-mile in 51 2-ssec.
