NEW AUSTRALIAN DESTROYER
The officers and crew of the Australian destroyer, H.M.A.S. Anzac have good reason to be proud of their ship’s immaculate appearance. Brilliant sunshine greeted the arrival of this second Anzac, which is on a training cruise, as she moved smoothly to her Lyttelton berth yesterday morning. The destroyer was greeted by the Australian defence representative at Wellington (Captain R. A. H. Miller, R.A.N.), the Lyttelton Harbourmaster (Captain -A. R. Champion), the Resident Naval Officer in Christchurch (Lieutenant-Commander G. A. Hannan), and the Australian Trade Commissioner for the South Island (Mr M. G. B. Coultas). The commanding officer (Commander I. H. Nicholson, R.A.N.), made visits to the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett), the Mayor of Christchurch ( Mr G. Manning), the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) and heads of the services. All the rating trainees are on their first voyage to New Zealand. Sood after the ship arrived, a squad of youths had physical training on the wharf. Entertainment will include
dances and sports, contesits against the Royal New Zealand Air Force and. United States servicemen. Golf is a popular sport among the shin’s company. Hockey and bask itball matches will also b e played. A reception was held aboa rd the destroyer last evenii tg. Official visiting hours will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. bn Thursday and Friday, b tit selected groups will be cc inducted over the vessel at other times. Today 30 boj/s from St. Joseph’s Home, Aldington, will be entertain 14 and a party of school caret; rs advisers and vocational guidance officers will visit lire Anzac for information pn naval careers. Forty sea cadets from T.S. Steadfast and 75 aircr e w cadets from Wigram will a im visit Anzac today. Wolf Cribs and other groups will jbe shown over the vessel. Due to sail to Dunedin tat 6 p.m. on Friday the Anz I c, which is the fastest destroy pr in the Royal Australian Navy, with a speed of 32 knots, will spend the week-end the: re, after which she will go tto Auckland for six days. At the end of her training cruise the Anzac will return to her normal service tn Australian waters.
