Lamb Tainted By Chemical In Hold
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, Aug. 24. The diligence of the system for the inspection and examination of meat and meat products arriving in the Port of Liverpool from foreign countries is demonstrated in the annual report of the medical officer of health to the Port Health Authority, says the “Meat Trades Journal.” Information was received that a quantity of New Zealand frozen meat had been found, on discharge at another port, to be tainted by dichloro-phenol, a pungent chemical which had been carried to New Zealand in drums in the same hold at the upper ’tween deck level of the ship. At Liverpool, no taint was detected until the carcases
were discharged from the refrigerated lockers at the upper ’tween deck level of one hold, next to the space in which the drums of dichlorophenol had been stowed on the outward voyage. A total of 3518 lamb carcasses and 1037 mutton carcasses was tainted. It was sent to firms in the London area for defatting and any other necessary reconditioning or processing.
