Tobacco Firms In Sport Criticism
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 24. Tobacco companies should be eased out of their position of promoting sports, said Dr. W. S. Taylor, secretary of the Mt. Roskill Health Protection Association, at a meeting of more than 100 people tonight.
The meeting had been called to discuss the dangers of cigarette smoking and methods of giving the habit up.
A medical viewpoint on smoking was also provided by a panel of four Auckland specialists. Dr. Taylor said it was the association's objective to campaign against the promotion of cigarettes and to do as much as possible to promote sport and health of mind and body. “The tobacco companies have got in before us,” he said. “Where can you find a sports meeting now that is not promoted or sponsored by a tobacco company? They even emoloy our best athletes." Dr. - Taylor predicted that the habit of smoking would
become extinct within 100 years. “We must press for legal sanction against the promotion of smoking,” said Dr Taylor. “This means to cut out the advertising of tobacco.” Dr. Taylor said, the tobacco companies would fight tooth and nail against it because of the consequences.
