Marist Rugby Final "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. St. Bernard’s College, Lower Hutt, won the Marist colleges’ quadrangular Rugby tournament in Lower Hutt yesterday when it comfortably beat Xavier College, Christchurch, in the final, 20-0. If the match was more closely contested than the score would suggest, Xavier was still unimpressive. Its forwards, though winning plenty of ball, were sluggish and its backs were guilty of numerous handling and passing errors.
St Bernard’s, on the other hand, was much more alert to its chances. Its forwards, too, hunted the loose ball with more pace and purpose.
The home school’s cover defence, especially that of the mid-field back, was little short of magnificent. On a number of occasions Xavier thrusts were thwarted barely inches from the goal-line. The best of the Xavier forwards were G. Huston, J. Walshe and D. Boyce. The half-back, G. Cox, and first five-eighth, A. Consedine, combined well, but kicked too much. The winger, P. Foreman, boded ill for St. Barnard’s on a couple of determined hip-bumping runs, but he was starved of opportunities.
