WEST ARM STRIKE
Men Meet Tomorrow (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 24. The 140 striking workers of Morrison-Downer-Fletcher will hold a meeting on Wednesday morning to decide whether to return to work. The tone of the meeting will depend on decisions made at tomorrow’s meeting of the Federation of Labour. The 11-day strike by the workers for union representation and a 50 per cent wage increase was referred to the F.O.L. by the New Zealand Workers’ Union. But even before the strike the F.O.L. had decided to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss conditions at West Arm. About 100 of the workers left West Ann at the weekend,’ but most are now making their way back in readiness for Wednesday’s meeting. The strike has meant that work on the Lake Manapouri power scheme access tunnel contract is further behind schedule: the tunnel was to have been completed by November 15.
