LIVING WITH MAORIS
Student Group Project “The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND, Aug. 24. A group of 14 university students, whose overseas members include a Negro and a Tongan, are working and living with the Maori community at Pukepoto. near Kaitaia, at a work camp run under the auspices of the New Zealand University Students’ Association.
The aim of the camp, which is expected to be the first of many, is to give students a chance to become aware of the national identity of New Zealand, its culture, history and people. The students in the camp are completing the Pukepoto play centre, work which involves labouring tasks such as laying paths, digging trenches and laying drains. The students are sleeping in the Pukepoto Maori Hall and their meals are being provided by the community. The Pukepoto community was selected for the first eamp because of.the need for the play centre to be completed and because it was typical of many Maori communities. The students in camp include Mr Sahr Charles, from Sierra Leone, who is studying at Victoria University, and Mr D. Helu, from Tonga, a science student at Auckland.
