PORT MORESBY, August 24. An Australian schoolteacher at Salamaua, near Lae, has asked for assistance to kill a large crocodile which insists on going to school. The crocodile, which is believed to be about 12ft long, regnlarly makes use of a path which passes a boys’ dormitory, the schoolteacher said today. The schoolteacher who has appealed for help is Mr Alfred Allison, who is in charge of the Salamaua native primary school. About 60 native children attend the school
which is isolated, and about an hour’s sail by canoe from the nearest village.
Mr Allison has written to the district school inspector for Lae, Mr Jack Doonar. He asked; “Can you provide me with a gun to use in the event of an attack or better still someone who is better equipped than 1 am to dispose of this unwelcome visitor.” Mr Doonar has passed the problem to the Department of Native Affairs, which he hopes will send an armed policeman to kill the crocodile.
