Boat Wrecked In Fiordland
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 24. A 40-foot fishing boat,-the Myth, is wrecked on the rough shores of Looking Glass Bay . near the entrance to George Sound on the Fiordland coast.
The skipper of Myth, who was alone at the time of the wreek, is Mr W. McQuarrie, of Bluff. The fishing boat, Glennifer, of which Mr W. Davis is skipper, picked him tip from the beach. It is thought they are sheltering from a gale in George Sound tonight. The Myth was first reported missing by another Bluff fishing boat, the Invader, which had been fishing in the same area. It is known the Myth was in Doubtful Sound until recently and her crayfish pots had been set in Nancy Sound. It seems that after looking at these pots, Mr McQuarrie must have been heading for Milford Sound. One of the crew, Mr T. Gilroy, returned to Bluff early last week with toothache and had not been able to get back into the area. They had three-quarters of a ton of crayfish tails in the Myth’s freezer and this would have been worth about £4OO to. the crew of the vessel and a considerable amount more on the export market. It is unlikely the cargo would have been insured
although it is known that the! Myth was covered. The. Myth is owned by the Bluff firm, Johnson Brothers. It is more than 40 years since Mr W E. Johnson built the Myth by himself at Horseshoe Bay, Stewart Island, and only five years ago since she had an overhaul costing more than £3OOO.
