RANDOM REMINDER
QUARTET
A dramatic coincidence of important events makes today one of the most remarkable of the year. At Uncaster Park, there is to be a Rugby test between Australia and New Zealand; and if New Zealand Rugby followers tend to regard Australian Rugby players much as Australian cricket crowds look at New Zealand cricketers (if they had the opportunity) there can be little doubt that on this occasion New Zealand will have a formidable task. The second event in this historical quartet is also a football match—Canterbury’s Ranfurly Shield challenge against Taranaki. It is unfortunate, and unfair, that the harsh rules governing these affairs give Taranaki the
right to have the match on its home territory. It would have made an excellent curtain-raiser to the test match. While everyone will wish the Canterbury heroes the best of good fortune at New Plymouth, there must be a few who hope they cover themselves with glory by having a drawn game: possession of the shield brings liabilities as well as assets. Third on the list of notable occasions is the annual dinner and dance of the company to which we owe our allegiance and our mortgage. All the youth and beauty of Christchurch will be there, and so will we, all of us wearing party hats and funny noses. Office social occasions are strange and
wonderful,—wonderful because of the great well of genuine goodwill on which to draw, strange because people who have worked beside each other for as long as 40 years invariably greet each other like longparted brothers. Fourth on the list? Our birthday, which we did nbt like to mention earlier in the week for the fear the Post Office might complain about the flood of inter-esting-looking parcels. It is not often we are able to celebrate a birthday on such a notable day. It should be possible to round off these notes by looking back, with quiet modesty, on a year of achievement. We tried that, and hastily faced the future. It will be lovely, to have a vote at last
