Gay Filou Top Winner, Le Filou Leading Sire

Gay Filou, the winner of the Wellington Cup, was the top stakes winner for the season just concluded, according to final statistics for the season published in the “New Zealand Racing Calendar.” The leading sire was Le Filou, sire of Gay Filou and also of Senor, the second highest stake winner. A feature of the statistics of stake winners is the fact that one quarter of the top 24 winners were sired by New Zealand-bred stallions. The six are Smoke Ring, Beauzami, Elkayel, Ringlock, Tasman Lad and Llanelly. Although the number of wins and placings of his progeny was well below those of Kurdistan, which had the greatest number of wins and olacings to his credit, Le Filou’s stock won the most stake money in New Zealand His progenv won 42 races and were 97 times placed, while Kurdistan’s won 78 and were placed 203 times. The broodmare sires list is notable for the continued dominance of Balloch and the long-dead Foxbridge.
