SPECIALIST DRAIN
Money Main Attraction
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 6. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) said today that he doubted whether the provision of more appointments in New Zealand for Lincoln-trained farm management specialists would stem the flow of these men to Australia.
“I think this would rather aggravate the position,” he said in Parliament today. “It is not the shortage of positions here, but rather the salaries paid in Australia, which attracts these men.”
He was answering questions by Mr D. S. Thomson (Govt., Stratford) based on remarks attributed to the principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns). Mr Thomson asked the Minister to urge on the statutory boards and Federated Farmers the need to provide more appointments in New Zealand for farm management specialists.
Shorter Fail.—State officials reviewing plans for a new gaol here have recommended that benches for seating drunks be lowered from 16 inches to 10 inches, “so that when they fall off they won’t fall so far,” the designer, Herbert Bohacket, explained.— Rochester, Aug. 5.
