CAPACITY DOUBLED
Over the short period of nine years since 1955, generating capacity had been doubled, more than a million kilowatts of plant having been commissioned in new power stations to bring the total to 2,006,000 kilowatts at March 31, 1964, said the report of the Power Planning Committee.
“Now, to meet the revised estimates of power needs, this figure must be increased to four and a half million kilowatts by 1975,” the report said.
The committee estimates that the nondomestic consumer was responsible for only slightly more than half of the increase last year in peak load and generation of 224 megawatts. Last year’s increase was about equivalent to the combined output of the Waikaremoana and Waitaki power stations.
The committee said the fact that domestic-con-sumer usage had increased almost in step with the expansion in commercial-industrial consumption exceeded all expectations. Electric space-heating and television were the prime causes.
