SALARY RISE

Secondary Teachers

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Aug. 5.

Post-primary schoolteachers would get a salary increase within two weeks, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said tonight.

He told members of the Victoria University National Club that teachers affected would be those now in the middle range of salaries and upwards. Principals of State postprimary schools will have their salaries increased to £2900. Mr Kinsella said the commission dealing with higher salaries for State services had dealt more generously with teachers than any other profession.

Teachers on lower grades would not get any increases. “There has been too much compression in the teaching profession. It is more important to have real opportunities at the top than just mediocre ones all the way up.” Mr Kinsella said new salary scales for university lecturers and professorships were now under discussion.
