HIGHEST PAY

Advice Of Visitor 6V.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 5. New Zealand should offer salaries to members of academic staffs of its universities which were at least comparable to those paid in Australia, said an eminent Australian economic historian. Dr. R. M. Hartwell, at Auckland today. Not to do this was “just damn stupidity,” he said. People left universities in New Zealand and Australia for two reasons—first, for the advantage of living in a larger society with its greater opportunities and the stimulus of its culture, and second, for the chance of earning higher salaries.

New Zealand could not possibly offer the advantages of the larger community, so the only chance it had to retain the talented people it needed was to make sure that the salaries were at least comparable.
