SYDNEY, Aug. 5.
The results of the last racing season reflected the poor quality of locally-bred stayers and suggested great success by New Zealanders in the spring carnivals, said racing columnist, Tim Whiffler, in the “Daily Telegraph” today.
New Zealand-bred horses had contested 171 races in Sydney of nine furlongs or more. Between nine and 10 furlongs there had been 128 races with New Zealanders winning one in four, whereas Australian horses out-num-bered them four to one.
“Of the 43 long-distance races, New Zealanders won 21. Last season a £1 bet on every New Zealander at 33/1 or less, in a race of 11 furlongs or more, would have shown a profit of £l5 135,” he said.
