New Aurora Found

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 5. A new *ype of a'lrora, the mantle aurora, has been found by the Dominion Physical Laboratory, says the annual report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It consists of a faint glow, covering the whole sky. Its total light output is much more important in the energy balance of the upper atmosphere than the

familiar aurora, which consists of arcs, bands and rays of green, red or white light, the report says.

“There is some reason to believe that the mantle aurora is more closely related to the processes that maintain the polar ionisphere. It may help the study of radio communication over long distances,” the report says.
