RESISTING CHANGE

Man, BuHock Power

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) KUALA LUMPUR, Man - powered pedicabs, pushcarts and bullock waggons are resisting the advance of motorised progress in Kuala Lumpur. Municipal policy in the Malaysian capital of about 500,000 people is to deny new licences for these vehicles. However, the number of pedicabs went down by less then 10 per cent, from 827 to 756, last year. Handcarts fell in number from 277 to 208, and bullock carts from 93 to 92.

“Waiting for all licensees to retire seems to be a slow business,” Mr N. Philipps, director of a current city transport study, told reporters. The existence of man and bullock-powered transport would have to be taken into account for a few years yet, he added.
