‘MINDLESS MORONS’

J Magistrate’s Verdict

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

HASTINGS, Aug. 5.

An invasion of “mindless adolescent morons” created an appalling atmosphere of tension at the English seaside resort of Hastings during the national Bank Holiday, a Magistrate said here today.

The Magistrate, Mr A. G. Coote, said the apprehension at the historic town in southeast England amounted at times to terror.

He sentenced 16 youths involved in the disturbances to terms at a detention centre, imposed fines of up to £5O on others, and sentenced one youth to two months’ imprisonment. The Magistrate called on Parliament to introduce measures to crush “this form of mass hooliganism.” Rival Gangs

Handcuffed in pairs, about 50 members of the two rival youth gangs, the leather clad “Rockers” and fancilydressed “Mods” appeared before the court today. They had been in custody all night. Most of them pleaded guilty to offences of threatening behaviour, carrying offensive weapons, or obstructing the police.
