NASSELLA CAMPAIGN

Progress In Govt. Area / (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 4. Encouraging progress had been made with the eradication of nassella tussock in the problem area in North Canterbury purchased by the Government in an all-out effort to prevent further spread of the weed, said the annual report of the Lands and Survey Department. The department was now responsible for 23,620 acres in five blocks and during the year 500 acres of infested land were spray killed and 1100 acres treated to control seed. Seedling control of very young tussock plants was carried out over 3500 acres. The nassella tussock blocks wintered 18,488 sheep and 1285 run cattle compared with 9886 sheep and 600 cattle a year earlier.
