NEWS MEDIA CONTROL

South Korean Legislation

{N.Z.PA.Reuter —Copyright) SEOUL, August 4. The South Korean National Assembly has passed a controversial law which President Park said was essential to prevent the press from i stirring up political unrest and fanning student demonstrations. Forty of 53 Opposition members walked out in protest as voting began. The official tally was 96 affirmative votes and 53 abstentions, including those who walked out, out of 149 votes. The law provides for a press examination commission which is empowered to order corrections and apologies to newspapers, wire services, magazines and radio stations after scrutinising what they publish. A spokesman of a committee of journalists’ organisations said the legislation might lead to the “death of press freedom.”
