ARBOR DAY PLANTING

South Malvern Schools

About 110 children from Glentunnel, Homebush and South Malvern schools planted more than 200 trees in the Coalgate plantation on Tuesday to celebrate Arbor Day. Mr M. A. Aitken, landscape overseer of the housing divi-

sion of the Ministry of Works, spoke to the children and the 40 parents present on the uses of trees in landscaping for schools, hospitals, and highways, and their importance in preventing erosion. Mr D. Waghorn, the Education Board member for the area, was also present Mandy Deans, aged nine, planted a totara tree as a memorial to her great-uncle, the late Mr J. Deans, as a tribute to his work and interest in the plantation. The tree was dedicated by the Rev. B. Carrell, of Hororata. The children then broke up into groups and planted trees and filled in blank spaces. Younger children cleared grass and broom. Trees planted were 100 Oregon pines, 75 radiata pines, six black poplars, six evergreen Lombardy poplars, six macrocarpas, six red beech and 18 specimen trees. Most of the trees were obtained by the Education Board through the Forestry Service and others were given. The ceremony was organised by the South Malvern district schools’ endowment plantation scheme committee.
