CARGOAT PORT

Increase For 10 Months

Cargo handled at Lyttelton continues to increase. Figures for 10 months given to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday showed an increase of 23,790 tons over the figures for the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Imports are up, amounting to 842,688 tons, compared with 807,023 a year ago; but there has been a slight drop in exports at 350,023 tons, against 361,898. “Trade is not growing as fast as it might,” said the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane). Mr E. Brophy said he was concerned that the crane hire charges were not breaking even. They showed a loss of £12,000 without allowing anything for depreciation. Some of the cranes which were 30 years old cost £6OOO, said the secretary-manager (Mr A. J. Sowden). The 12 cranes now being installed cost £40,000 each. Crane charges had been adjusted some time back. He favoured waiting until all the new cranes were installed and then fixing an overall charge to cover costs.
