Mr J. Percival, of Auckland, who controlled the first test, has been appointed referee for the third Rugby League match between New Zealand and France at Carlaw Park on August 15. Gliding Best Russia yesterday claimed another new world gliding re-i cord. The Tass Agency said Vladimir Chuvikov covered a triangular 370-mile course in a two-seater glider with a passenger, at an average speed of 56 miles an hour, six miles an hour faster than the existing record.—(Moscow. August 4.) S.I. Golf Field A near-capacity field of more than 90 will contest the South Island golf championships at Nelson next week-end. Entrants include the New Zealand champion, J. D. Durry, and the New Zealand representatives, I. D. Woodbury and P. K. Creighton (Wellington). J. P. Means (Taranaki) and R. H. M. Knight (Otaki). R. C. Murray (Canterbury) has advised he is not available because of business reasons.—(P.A.) Cyclists Train One of Wellington’s representatives in the Tokyo Olympic team, the cyclist, D. R. Thomson, will go to Auckland in two weeks time for concentrated training with other members of the cycling team. He will join the Auckland cyclists in training for the 100-kilometre time trial. The team has yet to work out riding positions and tactics. —(P.A ) Lap Record The New Zealand motorcyclist, R. Mulloy, twice broke a lap record at a road race meeting near Andover yesterday. Riding a 250 c.c. Bultaco he broke the existing record of 78.42 miles an hour in the lightweight race by covering the course at 80 miles an hour in a heat. During the final, which he won, Mulloy set up a new lap speed of 81.15 miles an hour. —(Andover, August 4.) Abandoned High seas yesterday forced the Argentinian marathon swimmer, Antonio Abertondo, to give up his attempt to swim from Capri to Naples and back, a distance of about 40 miles. He covered five miles, then abandoned the swim —(Capri, August 4.) Fumio Kaizu, of Japan, yesterday won the Orient middleweight boxing championship from the holder.
