Jeering Negroes Threw Rocks

GV Z Press Association —Copyright)

KANSAS CITY (Kansas), August 4.

Police today held nine men, including one who said he was a member of the Black Muslims, after a riot in which 1500 jeering Negroes threw rocks and debris and fought with officers for approximately three hours.

Five officers were injured, one seriously, and one of the rioters was shot in the arm. Patrolman Gilbert Durham, aged 38, was reported in fair condition today. He apparently suffered internal injuries when he was kicked in the stomach, police said. Leroy Jackson, aged 23, a Negro, received a bullet wound in the left arm. He was reported in good condition today. Police said the man they

believed instigated the riot, which followed a car accident, escaped after being subdued and place in a patrol car. He remained at large today. Those held included Joseph Anderson, aged 28, who told the police he was a member of the Black Muslims. Twelve charges were filed against him.

Police said that while only five officers accepted medical attention, many others suffered bruises and cuts when they were struck by thrown rocks and other debris. Car Accident

The first targets of the rioters were three officers who went to the scene, in a predominently Negro section of the town, to investigate the car accident. A total of about 40 officers were sent to the area in succeeding waves of reinforcements.

Dogs, night sticks and riot guns were used to disperse the rioters.

The Police Chief, Ted B. Peacock, said his men used too much restraint. “They would have been justified in using much more force than they did,” he said.
