CEREMONY TODAY

Consecration Of Bishop

As many as 2000 persons are expected at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes street this morning for the consecration of the new Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby). Thousands more are expected to watch the ceremonv on television, which will make the consecration the most widely-seen ceremony of its kind to be held in New Zea land. It is also the first such ceremony to be televised in this country’.

In addition to being televised live, the ceremony will be broadcast by station 3YC. The scene will be described by Miss G. Green, and a commentary will be given by the Rev. H. A. O'Reilly. The television commentator will be the Rev. J. Coleman. Senior classes in Catholic secondary schools in the city will also see the ceremony on television: sets have been installed in their classrooms Last evening the television equipment was already set up in the cathedral, including three cameras and numerous lights. Because of the value of the equipment a security guard was posted at the cathedral throughout the night.

It is expected because of the heavy guest list—invited guests will completley fill the main body of the Cathedral—there will be little room for visitors, and then only in the galleries.
