MAGISTRATE’S COURT Careless Driver Fined £10; Hit Parked Car

After running into a parked car in Auburn street on May 5. a car driven by the defendant hooked on to the front bumper of the other vehicle and pulled it along the road for about 24ft, Traffic Officer j F. McKee told Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. The defendant then reversed his car and drove off. Before the Court was Harry Jones, aged 43, a shoe operator (Mr M. J. Glue), who pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to stop after an accident, and guilty to a charge of careless driving. The charge of failing to stop after an accident was dismissed, and Jones was fined £lO on the other charge. Mr Glue said that Jones became flustered after hitting the other vehicle, but returned to the scene after parking his own car. "A person must stop after an accident, having regard to «1 the circumstances,” the Magistrate said. “However, the defendant did return to the scene after parking his car.” The Magistrate refused an application by Mr Glue for costs on the charge of failing to stop. The charge had been properly laid, and was dismissed on the narrowest of margins, he said. On the charge of careless driving, the Magistrate said the defendant was travelling too fast. It was bad driving. DROVE DANGEROUSLY Ernest Edward Mayes, aged 57, an engineer, was fined £lO and disqualified from driving for one year when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving in a dangerous manner in Yaldhurst road on May 30. “At 3 p.m. the defendant shot out of Carmen road onto Yaldhurst road,” said Traffic Officer B. K. Mcßride. “He drove through the compulsory stop governing the intersection at 35 miles an hour when his vision to the left was obscured by a hedge 9ft high There was no traffic about at the time.”

The defendant said he had been tired after working more than 12 hours.

CARELESS DRIVING Charged with driving carelessly on the Main North road through Belfast on May 7 Cohn Barrington, aged 50, a share milker (Mr G. C P Beadel), was fined £lO after pleading guilty. Traffic Officer J. Middleton said that Barrington was driving south through Belfast when he turned right into a private gateway. He gave no signal that he intended to turn, and was hit by another vehicle. Both cars were badly damaged, and the defendant’s car went into a ditch.

‘The defendant made no signal because he thought the other car was well away,” said Mr Beadel. ‘The other car must have been speeding.” IGNORED COMPULSORY STOP On a charge of failing to stop at a compulsory stop on April 14, Thomas Clyde Rogers, a baker, was fined fa and disqualified from driving for three months. Rogers did not appear. Traffic Officer B. K. Mcßride said he was driving along Memorial avenue when he s ** w a van being driven through the compulsory stop at Grahams road. Its speed was about 30 miles an hour. Visibility was bad at this corner. CARELESS DRIVING Charged with careless driving in Sawyers Arms road on May 2, Colin Frederick White, a printer, was fined £6 and his licence was endorsed for two years. A car in the middle of the road flashed its beam on full into oncoming traffic, said Traffic Officer B. K. Mcßride.
