Civil Defence Police

Recruiting for the Civil Defence Police in the Christchurch area was satisfactory, and 170 persons had now been listed, said Inspector E. G. Trappitt, of the Central Police Station.

The initial target for the area is 240, 60 per cent of the total that will ultimately be required. The special police will be used for duty in times of national or regional disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Inspector Trappitt said that none of the special policemen had been sworn in yet, but this would be done soon. He expected to have the initial list completed soon.

The special policemen will be in country centres from Kaikoura to Ashburton, as well as in Christchurch.
