FIELD SERVICE SCHOLARS
Departure For U.S. Next Week
Five girls and a youth will leave Christchurch next week for the United States, where they will spend a year at high schools under the American Field Service student exchange programme. Last year only two local youths went. The six are Nan Cross and Jane Latimer (Christchurch Girls’ High School), Joy Johnson (Avonside Girls’ High School), Suzanne Mackay (Papanui High School); Patricia O’Reilly (Sacred Heart College, Timaru), and Paul Armour (St. Andrew’s College). They will join 34 other young New Zealanders and will leave Wellington for America on July 28. Recently they were bidden farewell by the Christchurch
branch of the American Field Service.
No American exchange students will return to the United States with the 40 New Zealanders. This year American students are staying in the Dominion for 12 months instead of the normal six months. They will return home early in December.
