Minister Denies Charge On TV Land Acquisition
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 21. Only 10 acres of Maori land near Hedgehope was required by the N.Z.B.C. for a television repeater site for Southland, the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) said today. He was commenting on remarks by the chairman of the Maori Council (Sir Turi Carroll) that the Government had “pulled a fast one over the Maori people by taking 592 acres.” Mr Hanan said the Government would pay compensation for the 10 acres.
"The Maori owners—if they can be found—can keep the rest of the land if they want to,” he said. The land was granted to 20 owners by the Crown nearly 50 years ago. Since then, if succession orders were made for deceased owners, there would certainly be a large number of owners.
The Department of Maori Affairs knew the addresses of only a few, and it had not been possible to consult the owners. To have called a meeting of owners would
have taken a long time and would have unreasonably delayed the advent of television in Southland.
