CARTAGE OF SAND
Application Party Successful
The No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) has granted in part an application by Webbs Transport. Ltd., Mou .t Somers, for an amendment to its continuous goodj-ser-vice licence.
The application, opposed by the Railways Department (Mr F. Daly), was heard at Ashburton on July 2 and the authority reserved his decision.
The company (Mr R. G. Sinclair) applied for an amendment for four vehicle authorities, two for use on trailers only, in the No. 9 district authorising cartage of sand and superphosphate with exemption from rail restriction from Mount Somers to Hornby and return.
In his decision released yesterday, the Authority approved one existing vehicle authority for the cartage of silica sand, being the property of the Crown Crystal Glass Company, Ltd., from Mount Somers to Hornby, and one existing vehicle authority for use on trailer only. He gave exemption from rail restriction.
Mr Haywood said it was evident that the Crown Crystal Glass Company would not use rail transport for silica sand.
“Without taking the matter any further than economics and in particular, the national economy, the evidence shows that in the 10 months to April 30, 1964, glass products manufactured by the company saved the country £353,500 in overseas funds,” he said. Silica sand was a basic commodity in the manufacture of glassware, and as he saw no possibility of its being carried by rail as far as Crown Crystal was concerned, it was in the public interest to grant in part the application, said the authority.
