Y-Boys Humiliated By Rex In One-Sided Game

An appalling display of handling cost Y-Boys a vital win over Rex in the Canterbury A grade men's basketball competition last evening. After trailing. 8-12. at half-time. YBoys collapsed completely in the final 15min. suffering a humiliating defeat by 45 points to 23.

However. Y-Boys still maintains its third position in the competitio.n Burnham. one point behind for several weeks, lost to University A. Points are: University A 23. Y.M.C.A. 23, Y-Boys 14, Burnham 13, Rex 11, University B 8, Eangiora 4. Even Scoring at Start

Y-Boys began strongly and had four points before Rex opened its scoring. After the teams had settled down the scoring rate was extremely i even until the last 2min of the ; spell, when Rex forged away to a four-point lead. Y-Boys bej gan badly in the second spell, showing little cohesion. In the tinal ISmin. the team fell apart and its performance would not nave been worthy of the most lowly B grade team. Passing, shooting, rebounding and especially defence was rarely better than mediocre and frequently pitifully inadequate | Rex did not play any better • than usual, but its margin of superiority was enough to give it one of the most overwhelming wins of the season. It is a long time since any team collapsed quite as disastrously or unexpectedly as YBoys did. B. Woolford was once again a tower of strength for Rex. He was kept reasonably well in check by K. Ewing in the early stages. Unfortunately, Ewing received several calls against him which he disagreed with and appeared to lose interest as the margin widened, in the cios-. •ing minutes Woolford was com-i ■ pietely unmarked. R. Brown also had a good game and. inspired by the tn-i effective defence, successfully attempted a spectacular pass round his body in the middle of a lay-up shot. C. Harley was the best of the Y-Boys' players, although he too made many painful mistakes.

Scores: Rex 45 18. Woolford 18, R. Brown 14. J. McEvoy 9, G. Jones 4), Y-Boys 23 (C. Harley 8. B. Stead 4, K. Baker 3, J. Earles 2. R. Dew 2, G. Bourke 2. K. Ewing 2). University Convincing

University A gained a fairly convincing win over Burnham, 34-24, after leading. 12-8, at the break. The spread of the baskets was fairly even in the University team and all players had a reasonably good game. The hard driving leader of the Burnham team, C. P. Dyson, was kept well in check and W. Pihema was left to do most of the scoring. Scores: University A 34 (R. Zachariassen 8, S. Bridges 8, W. Ward-Holmes 6, R. Darsono 4, T. Morris 4, D. Young 2), Burnham 24 <W. Pihema 12, C. P. Dyson 4, G. Ward 4, B. Rose 2, J. Nichol 2).

After overcoming an early challenge. Y.M.C A. had little difficulty in defeating the bottom team. Rangiora. Neither team reached any great heights and in the early stages play was decidedly scrappy. In a match postponed from the second round and played on Sunday, University A narrowly defeated Burnham, 32-31. Scores: University A 32 <R. Zachariassen 13, W. WardHolmes 11, S. Bridges 4, T Morris 4). Burnham 31 (C P Dyson 11. G. Ward 11, W. Pihema 7. J. Nichol 6).
