AUSTRALIAN TEAM
290 For Tokyo Games (N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE, July 19. Australia will send a team of 290 athletes and officials to the Tokyo Olympic Games in October. This figure will be increased by a further 16 if the basketball team survives qualifying rounds. The Australian Olympic Federation has decided to pay for a team of 255 costing £137,700. The federation decided to allow a further 35 who had been nominated as having reached Olympic standard to go to Tokyo at their own expense. The basketball team was given a grant of £3OOO towards its expenses. Although the official Olympic appeal has raised £154,740, it is not expected that the additional 35 athletes will have any difficulty in securing finance for their trip. For the first time the team will take two medical officers with it and also a masseur. The federation executive made reductions in the nominated teams for fencing, gymnastics, equestrian, judo, rowing, shooting, wrestling, and weight-lifting as well as eliminating the basketball team. Those eliminated comprised the 35 who must find their own expenses and include grooms for the horses, the fencing coach, and also rowing coaches.
