AUCKLAND TITLE
(N.Z: Press Association) AUCKLAND. July 19. The defending title-holder, J. L. Julian, won convincingly under trying conditions to retain the Auckland provincial cross - country championship over the Cornwall Park circuit on Saturday. Mrs M. Sampson won the women’s trial with ease. Results of the championship were:— J. L. Julian, 40:29, 1; P. G. Snell, 41:15, 2; L. Mihaljevich, 41:22, 3; M. G. Halberg, 41:26, 4; V. Walker, 41:29, 5; A. B. Magee, 41:42, 6. Women’s Trial.—M. Sampson, 15:34, 1; C. Butler, 16:58, 2; C. Larsen, 17:28, 3. The harriers’ selectors, Messrs F. D. Sharp, A. A. Jelley, and W. Watt, have selected a husband and wife as team captains of their respective sections of the Auckland representatives to contest the national championships at Christchurch on August 8. J. Robinson will captain the senior team and Mrs Robinson will lead the women’s team against Canterbury. The teams are:— Senior.—J. L. Julian, J. Robinson, L. Mihaljevich, V. Walker, D. Dickey, I. Studd, J. Farmer, D. White; emergencies, L. Walker and B. Stuart. The Olympic nominees, P. G. Snell, W. D. Balllie, N. I. Scott, M. G. Halberg, R. Puckett, and A. B. Magee, as well as R. Chase, were unavailable. Women.—M. Sampson, H. Mains, L. Watt, V. Robinson, C. Butler, C. Larsen; emergency, M. Monnigatti.
