Strong Aust. Rugby Side

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 19. Fourteen players who toured New Zealand in 1962, are included in the 23-strong Australian Rugby team to tour New Zealand next month. The team was announced in Sydney this afternoon. Only four of the players are new to Wallaby ranks. Apart from the omission of the full-back, J. Lenehan, the team contains no surprises. The selectors preferred T. Casey to Lenehan. Casey replaced Lenehan in the Australian team which toured South Africa last year when Lenehan had to pull out in Perth with a knee injury. Casey went on to play in three of the tests of that series, including the two that Australia won. The team, which is to play three tests and five other

matches in New Zealand, contains 17 members of the team that played in South Africa, including the New Zealandborn flank forward, G. Davis. J. Thornett, who captained the 1962 team in New Zealand and the team in South Africa last year, has again been appointed captain. This equals the feat of Dr. John Solomon, who captained Australian teams in New Zealand in 1952 and 1955. This will be Thornett’s fifth Rugbyplaying tour of New Zealand. The touring party is dominated by New South Wales, with 16 representatives. 11 of them from metropolitan Sydney clubs. Queensland supplied six players, and the manager, Mr J. French, and Victoria supplied one. The team includes 11 backs and 12 forwards. Newcomers to Wallaby ranks are the five-eighths. R. Trivett. halfback, L. Lawrence, winger. D. Grimmond, and centre, R Honan. Features of the selection include the choice of twin

brothers, Stewart and Jim Boyce, as three-quarters, the choice of only two specialist locks and of five recognised loose forwards. The team, chosen after an exhaustive six-match trial series, has rugged strength in the forwards, and allround experience and ability in the backs. The team is (New South Wales unless stated otherwise): —Full-back: T. Casey. Three-quarters: E. S. Boyce, J. S. Boyce, R. E. Honan (Queensland). D. N. Grimmond, R. J. P. Marks (Queensland), B. J. Ell wood. Fiveeighths: P. F. Hawthorne, R. K. Trivett (Queensland). Half-backs: K. Catchpole, L. Lawrence (Queensland). Hookers: P. G. Johnson, A. Laurie. Props: J. E. Thornett, L. R. Austin, J. P. L. White. Locks: R. J. Heming, C. P. Crittle. Flank or number eight: J. Guerasslmoff (Queensland), E. J. Henreich, G. V. Davis, D. J. O’Neill (Queensland), D. J. Shepherd (Victoria).
