. Unbeaten throughout the tournament, Nelson won the South Island women’s indoor basketball A grade title at Cowles Stgdium when it finished on Saturday evening. Canterbury and Otago tied for second place.

After overwhelming the weak West’ Coast in the early game, Nelson was in fine form when it met Canterbury. From the opening of the match, Nelson showed superority on attack and fine passing between D. Morrice, D. Robins, J. Gay and S. Marris . brought many scoring opportunities. Canterbury appeared sluggish and the slow passiftg tactics used gave’ Nelson plenty

was expected to give Canterbury a close game, but from the outset the local team looked the better combination and quick goals by Chamberlain and Hudson gave Canterbury an early lead. Canterbury, however, still found trouble in penetrating the Otago defence and relied repeatedly on J. Taylor to cut and use her normally accurate jump shot for points. The tall centre, R. Matheson, was prominent for Otago and combined well with H. Agnew and A. Solomon to bring her team’s score to a respectable total. But Canterbury had a burst of scoring in the second half to give it a comfortable lead and an untroubled win. Results:— Nelson 63, West Coast 13; Canterbury 35, Southland 28: Otago 44, West Coast 10; Nelson 39, Canterbury 32; Otago 43, Southland 25; Nelson 47, Southland 33; Canterbury 54, Otago 33.

of chances to guard out the shots at goal. In spite of this, play remained even for most of the first half and not until the second half did Nelson take a convincing lead. The passing and shooting of Marris, Morrice and H. Fellowes put Nelson well in the lead and the team’s complete dominance of all the rebounds was a major factor in its win.

Hard Rushed Canterbruy was hard pushed to beat Southland in an early game and trailed in points most of the time. The taller Southland players appeared to unsettle the Canterbury girls, and the latter only showed a glimpse of their usual form until the last few minutes when good shooting by J. Hudson, J. Taylor and S. Chamberlain put Canterbury in the lead. In one of the main evening games. Nelson again displayed its fine attacking tactics and sure shooting ability to beat Southland. That team, with C. Harvey, H. Anderson and J. Allen prominent, caused the eventual winner considerable bothek in the first half,.and intercepted many, passes. Fine set shots kept Southland level until, in the second half, more determined guarding kept Southland from shooting and Nelson was seen to advantage. Marris, in particular, cut through the Southland defence to score almost at will, and, with 17 points, was the top scorer for the match. Otago, with good wins over Soutluand and the West Coast.
