J. H. Winter May Race Three At Addington

The Springston trainer, J. H. Winter, is preparing Aiblins, Anterior and Lumumba for early spring racing. If they make satisfactory progress, they will all be seen in action at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting at Addington next month.

Winter is also working a number of young horses, including two more of the progeny of a New Zealand Cup class mare in Excelsa.

Aiblins, a rising six-year-old gelding by Stormyway from a New Zealand Oaks winner in Bonnie Castle, had only nine starts this season for one win and three placings. For a time he was barred from racing at totalisator meetings, otherwise his record would have been much better.

Aiblins is a big, strong pacer well endowed with stamina. He is on -a 2min 15 sec mark, and if he races as well as be did in his few starts towards the end of this season he should have a most profitable innings in the next 12 months.

Anterior, too, paid her way this season. She had two wins and one placing from 14 starts, her most recent win being in a sprint at Rangiora Raceway in March when she beat the smart Westport pacer, Hurry Up. Anterior is a rising seven-year-old mare by Flying Song from a fine winner in Maida Dillon, by Dillon Hall. She might never go as far as Aiblins. but she should continue to pay her way.

Lumumba will probably be a candidate for the Four-year-old Stakes on the first day of the national meeting on August 15. He had only four starts for one win and two platings and showed himself to be a young pacer well above average in ability. Lumumba is a rising four-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from Avondale Lass, by Gamble. Avondale Lass left earlier winners in Welsh Heir, Mark Dale and Avondale Heir, all to unfashionable sires.

A rising three-year-old gelding by Stormyway from Excelsa is showing promise, as also is a rising two-year-old colt ranking as a brother to this youngster. Excelsa’s two earlier foals showed ability when first produced by Winter, but they were sold early in their careers to Australia. The first raced in New Zealand as Atlanta. but her name was changed to Little Maori when she went to Sydney. She has been one of the best winners at Harold Park this season. Melanian. a brother to Little Maori, was sold to Australia a few months ago. This three-year-old showed tremendous potential and he should make a name for himself in Sydney in the next 12 months. A rising two-year-old colt by U. Scott from Avondale

Lass is a half-brother to An- j terior, while a rising threeI year-old gelding by Stormy- ’ way from University is a half- ; brother to the promising Cloudy Bay. Beat Overtrick Hi Lo s Solar, a son of I Frisco Forbes, became the second pacer this season to ■beat Overtrick when he won la race worth 50,000 dollars I at Sportsmen’s Park, Chicago, last week. One of last season's leading three-year-olds. Hi Lo's Solar has a record of Imin 58 4-ssec. Frisco Forbes is represented at the stud in New Zealand by a former champion, Hi Lo’s Forbes. • Leased Safety Catch has been leased by the Ashburton trainer. A. C. Amyes and all going well he will have his first start for his new trainer late in the spring. Safety Catch, a rising 11-year-old half-brother by U. Scott to ;Florican and Secure, failed in ifour starts in the . early part I of this season. Amyes is also working ' Sally's Song and a rising six-year-old half-brother by Masterpiece to the trotter. Fiamimetta. Sally’s Song finished 'third to Johnny Bell and Don Caesar at Methven in his lone 'start this season. He is a half-brother by Flying Song to Sally Boy. Turned Out Mile End has received treatment for corns and is still turned out The Flying 'Song mare will probably be brought back next month and if she makes satisfactory progress she will be ready for ■ racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. I She had quite a good season jand from 23 starts gained i three wins and seven placings \ In the meantime her trainer. ‘ L. H. Broom, has Major Domo I in steady work. Major Domo. i which showed promise at trials this season, is a rising three-year-old half-brother by Garrison Hanover to Mile | End. Kept Going Polydorous and Raceday have been kept going during the winter by G. F. Middle-; ton at Highbank. Both will

be prepared for early spring racing. Polydorus has not raced since she won over two miles at Waimate in December in the smart time of 4.36. She had a strenuous time as a three-year-old and gained two wins and five placings from nine starts this season. The Zancara mare should be a big winner in the next 12 months. Raceday joined Middleton’s team towards the end of the season after racing with moderate success in Southland. He had four starts and was twice placed at the Nelson winter meeting, his best effort being a second to Beresford Lady. The Irish Orator gelding should be a sound proposition for minor meetings in the spring.

SOUTH CANTERBURY Gleniti Stakes: Bill Tee, La Sara Celia. Hadlow Hurdles: Brianbra. Corduroy, Corvale.

Duke of Gloucester Cup: El Toro, Kaikuri, Norain. Wynburg. Claremont Handicap: Captain Hunt Pentlow Stakes: Ejay.
