BUILDING SEMINAR

“Critical Path*’ Method "The critical path method of construction management,*’ a new technique of integrating and more closely checking every stage from planning to completion, will be described at a seminar to be held by the departments of civil engineering and extension studies at the University of Canterbury on September 2, 3. and 4. Although more than six i weeks away, 24 have already enrolled and they will come ' from as far away as Whangarei and Gore. They include architects, engineers, and contractors. Entries close '1 on August 7. I Mr F. P. S. Lu, senior lecturer in civil engineering, 7 will conduct the seminar after an introduction by Processor H. J. Hopkins. Mr Lu i introduced the critical path method to New Zealand after ' a fellowship visit to the United States. “Fantastic advantages” have been claimed by Mr Lu for the new method. It calls , for the close collaboration of architects, engineers, and contractors from the start, determination of the “path” well in advance, and then careful “balancing” of manpower, material, and equipment which must not depart ifrom schedule at any stage. After lectures, members of the seminar will apply the critical path to projects of their choice and there will be panel discussions on the results.
